Intuit has phased out new subscriptions for most QuickBooks Desktop products and has discontinued live services (like payroll, bank feeds, and updates) for older versions. Support for Desktop version 2023 will end on May 31st, 2026. Expect support for version 2024 to end this time next year.
Here is what you can do:
- Backup and Secure Your Data First. Regardless of what you choose, immediately back up your files. Go to File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup and save copies in at least two secure locations (like a local drive and a cloud copy).
- Check Your Version. Press F2 in QuickBooks to verify your exact version year.If you are on an older version (2023 or earlier): Your services have been discontinued. You can continue using it without online features, or you must upgrade. If you are on 2024: You still have runway, but you should plan your transition.
- Choose Your Path Forward. Move to QuickBooks Online: This is Intuit’s heavily encouraged path. You can migrate your data seamlessly using the QuickBooks Online Migration Tool. Upgrade to Desktop Enterprise: If you need to keep Desktop-only features, Intuit still supports and sells QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for existing and new users (the cost is high though). Switch to Alternative Software: If you want to leave Intuit entirely, small business owners and accountants often migrate to platforms like Patriot Software, Odoo, or Xero.
No matter which plan you decide to go with, Data Troop is fully equipped and ready to assist you every step of the way during your transition process.
